School System

The Elk City Public School District and its accomplishments are a source of pride for the community. The people of El city hold a strong belief in the value of education and support a public system that pursues excellence in all aspects. The school’s mission is to develop an educational program that will motivate and allow students to identify and achieve their highest potential whether in academics, sports, music, or the arts.

With a student to teacher ratio of less than 20 to one ensures that each student will receive an individualized education from highly qualified teachers. Of the 173 certified teachers, 57 percent hold maters degrees.

Southwestern Oklahoma State University, a four-year accredited college with an outstanding school of pharmacy, is located just 40 minutes east of El City. SWOSU Sayre Campus and the area’s Vo-Tech College-Western Technology Center is just 15 minutes to the west of Elk City.

ABOUT OUR SCHOOL SYSTEM

Academic excellence is stressed throughout Elk City's school system. A student receives an individualized education from highly qualified teachers. Fifty-seven percent of the 173 certified teachers hold master degrees.

The Elk City Public School system offers a full range of extra curricular student activities, clubs, organizations, gifted and special education programs. The Elk City Public School students receive a high quality, well-rounded education.

Elk City Public Schools encourage its male and female students to participate in organized athletic programs. These well-coached programs include golf, track and field, basketball, baseball, football, softball, soccer, and cross-country. Also, other organizations and activities include band, vocal music, technology education, vocational programs, honor societies, science and math clubs, academic teams and others.

Close proximity to Western Oklahoma Area Vo-Tech allows the student to work in a wide variety of industrially oriented programs on a daily basis.

Immunization of Students

No child shall be admitted to the Elk City schools without evidence of having received the immunizations required by the State Department of Public Health. These immunizations are:

  • 5 DPT
  • 4 Polio
  • 2 Measles
  • 2 Rubella
  • 3 Hepatitis B
  • 2 Hepatitis A
  • 1 Varicella

Enrollment Requirements

In order for a child to begin kindergarten, he or she must be five years of age on or before the first day of September of the year the child intends to enroll. To be eligible for first grade, a child must have reached his or her sixth birthday on or before September 1 of the year he intends to enroll. The child's parent may use a birth certificate, parent's statement, physician's statement, or previous school records to verify the child's age. The maximum age to attend Elk City schools tuition free is 21. The residence of any child for school purposes shall be the legal residence of the parents, legal, or person or institution having care and legal custody of the child.

The Elementary Years

Our elementary schools will provide students in kindergarten through sixth grade with challenging learning experiences. These schools are:

  • Northeast K & 1st Grade Center
  • Fairview 2nd & 3rd Grade Center
  • Pioneer PK & 4th Grade Center
  • Grandview 5th & 6th Grade Center

The Secondary Years

Elk City Junior High and Elk City High School provide students in grades seventh through nineth and tenth through twelfth, respectively, with a solid curriculum in addition to a variety of extra curricular activities to enrich their educational experiences.

Transportation

Elk City Public Schools provides bus transportation to students who live outside of a one and a half mile radius of the school and at any future designated pick-up points. Students enrolled in vo-tech classes shall ride the school bus to their classes unless the school principal has permitted alternate transportation.

Graduation Requirements

The following solids are required for graduation:

  • English 4 units
  • Mathematics 3 units
  • Science 2 units
  • American History 1 unit
  • Oklahoma History .5 unit
  • World History .5 unit
  • Social Studies 1 unit

Graduation requirements for the 1998-1999 school year will be 25 units of credit. Vo-Tech students may substitute six units from vo-tech for one unit of math and one unit of science.

Grading

Elk City Public Schools uses the following grading scale for all subjects including special education:

  • A 90-100
  • B 80-89
  • C 70-79
  • D 60-69
  • F 59 & below

However, AP Government, AP Chemistry, Calculus, Jr. High Honors English and Jr. High Math Honors class allow seven percent to be added to the number grade. There are not semester test exemptions for secondary students.
